Formed in 2007, The Dø is a folk/rock duo comprised of Finnish vocalist Olivia Bouyssou Merilahti and Paris-born multi-instrumentalist Dan Levy. The unexpected success of their debut album, A Mouthful, which climbed all the way to the top of the French charts, took the industry by surprise. The band’s youthful exuberance and fresh folky sound conquered the hearts of many, even though some critics were put of by their unruly mixing of genres and styles.
Playing non-stop on my mp3 right now is “I Get Around” by Dragonette…
This Canadian electropop four piece is great at crafting catchy pop songs with great hooks and this exactly what they did on their new single “I Get Around”. Uplifting, unashamedly pop and highly danceable, this is excatly the kind of music you what you wanna hear when you’re riding the metro and everyone around you looks sad and grey. Give it a try and you might end up dancing and singing in the metro very soon.
The band consists of singer-songwriter Martina Sorbara, bassist and producer Dan Kurtz, guitarist Chris Hugget and drummer Joel Stouffer. Their first record, the Dragonette EP, was released in 2005, prior to signing a record deal with Mercury Records. Dragonette then relocated to London to record their debut album Galore and toured the UK supporting local acts, including Basement Jaxx.
The singles “Take It Like A Man” and “I Get Around” performed quite poorly on UK charts but Dragonette did get some airplay with “The Boys”, a cover of Calvin Harris‘ hit single “The Girls”, and they also became a favourite of many electro blogs…

Tracey Thorn is an English singer and songwriter best known for being one half of the duo Everything But The Girl, which she formed in 1981 with musical partner and husband Ben Watt. Out of the Woods is Thorn’s first strictly solo album since 1982′s indie classic A Distant Shore and first new original release since Everything But The Girl’s 1999 album Temperamental.
The whole idea of making a new album hatched about two years ago after a collaboration with German duo Tiefschwarz on the dancefloor hit “Damage”. Thorn originally thought the album would be mostly covers but she somehow “found [herself] writing more songs and collaborating with people” and she “made a pop record without really meaning to”.
With producer Ewan Pearson she has developed an electrofolk sound Ranging from subdued electronica to downright glittering disco, the songs on Out Of The Woods really enhance Thorn’s lyrics and magical voice.
The first single “It’s All True” is already receiving a lot of well deserved blog love and we are starting to hear the first remixes. Kris Menace, Martin Buttrich and Escort are amongst the first artists to give the song the remix treatment. They probably won’t be the last..
