VIDEO : CRYSTAL CASTLES – COURTSHIP DATING (Electro/8Bit – Canada)

Crystal Castles is an electronic music duo from Toronto, which consists of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Their swift rise to fame came after a string of successful singles and remixes (White Lies, Van She, The Whip), but also after a few chaotic live shows, that came to characterise the band. The video above is for the song “Courtship Dating”, taken off their debut album.

THE TING TINGS – WE WALK (Indie/Pop – UK)

The Ting Tings

The Ting Tings are Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass drum) and Jules de Martino (drums, guitar, vocals, piano) and their first album We Started Nothing (Columbia) has been all the buzz in 2008. Packed with a cheery parade of songs likewise saturated with electro beats and chant-along vocals, the album has already spawned three hit singles: “Fruit Machine”, “Great DJ” and the Krautrock-influenced “That’s Not My Name”.

The synth-punk shout-pop of this boy/girl duo might be a little inconsistent but what it lacks in finesse it makes up for in spontaneity and catchiness.

Ariel

Amiel Daemion, better known as just Amiel, was born in New York but grew up in Australia, where her family moved when she was just 2. Her music career shot to fame in 1999 when she teamed up with producer Josh G. Abrahams for the song “Addicted to Bass”, a top twenty hit in Australia and around Europe. This led to Daemion releasing studio albums such as Audio Out in 2003 and These Ties in 2005. The song “Be Your Girl” was released in 2006 an EP of remixed songs from her second album.

YAEL NAIM (Acoustic/Folk/Pop – France)

Yael Naim was born in Paris in 1978 but only spent the first four years of her life there. At age four she  moved to Ramat Hacharon, a small town not far from Jerusalem, with her parents, of Tunisian origin.

Singer-songwriter and pianist, Yael met percussionist David Donatien, a musician and percussion player, with whom she recorded, arranged, and produced the songs that make up her first studio release. During the 2 years they spent in a home studio in Yael’s own appartment, they created an album full of finely crafted songs sung in Hebrew, English and French. The songs mix folk and pop with delicate arrangements and a very intimate and personal sound.
