WASHED OUT – MISTER MELLOW (Lo-Fi/Electronica – US)

Multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, has been making music out of his home studio in Georgia for close to 10 years. His album Mister Mellow was released a few months ago on Stones Throw Records, accompanied by a visual album on DVD.

Conceived over the course of 2 years, Mister Mellow is intensely personal (Greene’s only collaborator was mix engineer Cole MGN) – but the ideas and observations found within the album speak to a much larger shared experience that is affecting an entire generation. The album was influenced by old classics as well as the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète. Styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych are combined together to create a busy, chaotic mix.

ELKKLE – FRAILS (Electronica -Australia)

Melbourne artist Elkkle (Callum Baker) has been getting a lot of attention in the past few months; he collaborated with Aussie songstress Woodes and also co-wrote Golden Vessel’s ‘Shoulders’. And now he has a brand new single ready for your listening pleasure.

“‘Frails’ is about the relationship between mental and physical health. Sometimes when one begins to slip, it’s very easy to let it drag the other one down. It describes feelings of fragility, hopelessness, and isolation. Albeit with a desire to be better.” – elkkle

This new tune follows on from Elkkle’s critically acclaimed singles “Soft Erasure” and “Diderot”, released in June 2017 and November 2016 respectively. He is now working hard on his debut solo EP, which should hopefully be released before the end of the year.

OSCAR & THE WOLF – INFINITY (Indie/Pop – Belgium)

Belgian pop export Oscar and the Wolf returns with the latest single lifted from his brand new album Infinity, out now via PIAS. Produced by Belgian techno wizard One Track Brain, “Runaway” is a grittier, late-night club take on O&TW’s signature indie pop sound, combining seductive vocals and icy-cold minimal beats.

In the past couple of years Oscar & The Wolf, helmed by multimedia artist Max Colombie, have released a string of chart-toppers in Belgium (“So Real”, “Breathing”, “Strange Entity”), rapidly transitioning from undergound blog favourite to household name. After headlining Pukkelpop and being the first live band to play Tomorrowland, they are embarking on a sold out tour which includes two back-to-back dates at Antwerp’s 23,000-capactiy Sportpaleis.

Infinity features 12 tracks oscillating between dark electro and poetic indie pop, most of them written by Colombie at home in Brussels. The new set fuses exquisitely delivered vocals with layers of synths and thumping beats, matching a cinematic quality to an emotive flair. Colombie explains: “I’ve never made such an eclectic collection of songs, and it’s turned out that way because I’ve had kind of a dramatic year. But actually I think drama can be a good thing. […] That’s where the music comes from.”
