PHOENIX – ALPHA ZULU (Indie/Pop – France)
Grammy Award-winning band Phoenix — Thomas Mars (lead vocals), Deck d’Arcy (bass, keyboards, vocals), Christian Mazzalai (guitar, vocals) and Laurent Brancowitz (guitar, keyboards, vocals) — returns with Alpha Zulu, released via Glassnote Records. The album was inspired by Philippe Zdar of the band Cassius, who produced three of Phoenix’s albums and died in 2019.
Recorded during the height of the pandemic in Paris, at the iconic Louvre museum, Alpha Zulu sees the indie-pop heavyweights stretching their sonic borders. About the creation of the album, the band said: “[we were] a bit afraid, when there was too much beauty around us, that to create something could be a bit hard. But it was the opposite: we couldn’t stop producing music. In these first 10 days, we wrote almost all of the album.”
The fourth single from the album, “Winter Solstice”, was released on 20 October 2022. “Winter Solstice” is the only song the band did not craft together in the studio, instead writing it remotely, building from a long loop that Brancowitz, Mazzalai, and D’Arcy sent to frontman Mars, who then recorded stream-of-consciousness lyrics for it.
