Charlotte Gainsbourg

Just a few months after the Terrible Angels EP, French/English songstress Charlotte Gainsbourg is already back with Stage Whisper, a double-LP of live and unreleased material released via Because Music / Elektra. You might have already heard the first single “White Telephone”, well here comes another song from the collection, “Paradisco”, written and produced by Beck.

To celebrate this release, Beatport gave producers a chance to remix “Paradisco” and maybe get their remix released on Because Music—home to the likes of Metronomy and Uffie. You can listen to all the remixes here or stream our favourites below…

LYKKE LI – WOUNDED RHYMES (Indie/Folk – Sweden)

Swedish songstress Lykke Li, who grabbed the attention of bloggers and music critics in the late 2000s with her gorgeous debut album Youth Novels, stayed away from the spotlight for a long time (too long, her fans will say) to write her sophomore effort. Three years it took her to come up with Wounded Rhymes, co-written and produced by Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John), but these years were well employed.

Following the success of her quirky debut, Li was often wrongly tagged as just another frail-voiced electronic artist. With her new album, the young artist shows a completely different of her artistic persona. This time around her voice is stronger, huskier and darker and her confident presence shines through. With Yttling’s help she has created a sweet and sour album that constantly navigates between the brash and the quiet, eftortlessly combining pouding drums, multilayered vocals and lush textures.

Sure enough Lykke Li’s new tunes have attracted some of the best DJs and producers around and remixes are already popping up left and right.

Charlotte Gainsbourg made her musical debut in 1986, with the album Charlotte Forever, produced by her father Serge Gainsbourg. However, it took her twenty years to release her second album, 5:55 (Because Music, 2006). Charlotte collaborated on the album with French duo Air, English musician Jarvis Cocker, and Irish singer-songwriter Neil Hannon, as well as Radiohead‘s main producer Nigel Godrich This album awarded her critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the top spot on the French charts and achieving platinum status in the country.

In late 2009, Gainsbourg released her third studio album, IRM, which was co-written and produced by Beck. The album is a patchwork of different musical genres but what stays consistent through the whole record is Gainsbourg’s soft, intimate voice and Beck’s overwhelming indie rock influence.

The album, which is conceived as a journey into human psyche, is sometimes bright and alluring, sometimes dark and disorienting, but always interesting. It reflects Charlotte’s growth as an artist and is also a compelling demonstration of musical cooperation between two artists.

For your listening pleasure, check out two fantastic remixes of the song “The Operation”, taken off Charlotte’s 2006 release, 5:55. The first remix is by French producer 25 Hours a Day and the second by Cousin Cole.
