HOLY GHOST! – CRIME CUTZ (Electro/Funk – US)

Holy Ghost!

Three years ago, Brooklyn disco duo Holy Ghost! released their sophomore album Dynamics and they are finally back with a new EP, Crime Cutz, to be released on April 29 via DFA. You have to give it to Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel for bringing back the unadulterated beats of the 80s with ambition and undeniable mastery.

The title track to the upcoming EP, which was premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats1 show, is a seven-minute super funky jam featuring retro synths and incredibly fresh hooks. It gradually builds up to an electrifying crescendo before winding down to a blissful close. A real pop tour de force!

The band is currently touring Australia and will be back in NYC for a live performance at MoMA’s Armory Party in March. More info on their website or Facebook. Buy the music on

Electro bizarre duo Yacht is back with a new single and a fantastic new video to go with it! The I Walked Alone EP was released on November 28 via DFA Records, featuring five remixes and reworkings by the likes of Larry Gus, Max Tundra, Get A Room! and Jacques Renault.

The download bundle also includes the video directed by YouTube superstar Mitchell Davis, who also happens to be a longtime supporter of Yacht. The band invited him out to Portland to direct the music video for “I Walked Alone” and the result is a wonderful graphic illustration around the theme of cyclical interconnectedness.

Originally hailing from London, Woolfy started hitting the clubs in Los Angeles as a teenager and by the time he turned 19 he already knew DJing was his destiny. So he bought a couple of turntables and before you know he was playing his first gigs around LA!

The rest is history: he founded the deep house & funk club Pressure, became a resident DJ at the legendary Café-Club Fais Do Do and started the duo Projections with Danny Hastie in 2000, as well as the underground band Sounds From The Ward. If the latter remained dormant, Projections went on to sign with Guidance Recordings and subsequently released the album Between Here & Now in 2002 and a handful of singles, giving Woolfy some well deserved exposure on the club circuit and amongst electronica enthusiasts.

While in New York around 2004, Woolfy met DJ Spun of Rong Records playing at his local. A few bottles of rum later, a deal was struck to release Woolfy’s first solo single “Oh Missy”, as a split single with Projections. Fast forward to 2009 and the release of the album If You Know What’s Good For Ya!! including standout tracks “Odyssey”, “Looking Glass” and “Two Far Gone”…

Woolfy - Odyssey

With influences ranging from dirty disco and 80s music to English punk, pub funk, Woolfy’s sound is polished and mature but also full of emotions. You can sample more of his music, as well as a few Projections tracks, on Woolfy’s MySpace. Buy the music on

DISCODEINE – SYNCHRONIZE (Disco/Electro – France)

Discodeine are is a French duo born in 2007 from the sick minds of Pilooski and Pentile (aka Benjamin Morando). They have already a few remixes (for Metronomy, Bot’Ox, Photonz…) and three acclaimed EPs on French imprint Dirty, home label of the well known “Dirty edits” (a collaborative project between Pilooski and Dirty Sound System).

Their disco-influenced grooves have been tracklisted by the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, Erol Alkan, Ewan Pearson, Chloé, Prins Thomas, and Aeroplane. For their forthcoming album, they have collaborated with a few A-list artists, including Jarvis Cocker, who lends his vocal skills to the track “Synchronize”. Sure works for me!

Discodeine - Synchronize (Feat. Jarvis Cocker)

As stated on their MySpace, “Discodeine is about club music and intensity, voodoo, chicago house, futuristic disco, jackin’ techno, analog basslines…” They have been delivering massive electro house hits for a few years now and they seem to have found a good formula.

Discodeine - Invert (Parce Que Edit)

The track you can listen to here was re-edited by Parce Que and reached new heights of disco perfection in the process. This version is more minimalistic in its approach and its slow-grinding groove and sick synths totally hit the spot. tripped down edits just pushes all the right buttons.
