saturday nite with… THE WHIP

Formed in 2006, The Whip is an electronic rock band from Manchester, composed of Fiona “Lil Fee” Daniel on drums, Nathan Sudders on bass and Bruce Carter on vocals and guitar. The band’s debut album, X Marks Destination, was released on Southern Fried Records three years ago, in March 2008.

The Whip - Divebomb (Futurecop! Remix)

After a clutch of heavily hyped up singles including club hits “Trash” and “Divebomb”, which established the band at the forefront electronic rock music scene, The Whip will return in September with a new album, entitled Wired Together. A move on from the high octane nature of X Marks Destination, the new album retains The Whip’s ability to set pulses racing with pounding rhythms, electro handclaps and dancefloor friendly beats.

The fruit of eighteen months of hard work and almost six months spent night and day in the studio of producer Jagz Kooner in London, Wired Together broadens the band’s palette to introduce a  more celebratory vibe and a more lyrical version of the band’s dance music. What it may like in finesse, the record will probably make up for in catchy hooks and electrifying outbursts of pop energy. This will be for The Whip’s fans to decide…

The album is available to pre-order from the band’s site at www.thewhipband.com from June 20th.

CHICKS ON SPEED @ SPRINGTEN (Electroclash/Alternative – Germany)

For over ten years Chicks on Speed have been blurring the boundaries between music, graphic art, video and fashion. Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan, who met at the Munich Art Academy, created CoS in 1997 to organise art exhibitions and host illegal parties. Later on they met Kiki Moorse, who was the third member of CoS until 2006, when she left to pursue a career in DJing and start a new music project, Bad French, with Andreas Reihse. They have also collaborated with many artists, including Anat Ben-David, Kathi Glas and A.L. Steiner.

Chicks on Speed - Buzz

After releasing a handful of critically acclaimed LPs, Chicks on Speed are now experimenting with a new form of music distribution. Since April 1st they are releasing one track per month absolutely for free (www.chicksonspeed.com) and performing live DJ sets across Europe to promote their new tracks. Last night they rocked springten with a colourful DJ set / happening during which they danced, sang, spinned records and even performed acrobatics on stage.. See some pics HERE.

Chicks on Speed - The Beat Is Happening

For Chicks on Speed, the traditional album is dead and that’s why they’ve decided to take advantage of this digital era by not having any record company between them and their fans. All new songs, produced by Dirty Disco Youth (aka Phil Speiser), will be given out for free on chicksonspeed.com and fans will even be able to download stems and create their own remixes, thereby becoming part of the creative process and artistic dialogue promoted by CoS.

For those of you who are new to Chicks on Speed, let’s go back in time a few years and listen to their now legendary collaboration with Canadian artist Peaches. “We Don’t Play Guitars”, or do we?

Fischerspooner is an electroclash duo and performance troupe formed in 1998 in New York. The name is a combination of the founders’ last names, Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner. Spiking retro electropop tendencies (think Kraftwerk, early Pet Shop Boys, and Gary Numan) Fischerspooner gained fame in the early 2000s with their albums #1 and Odissey.

The duo’s new album, Entertainment, still explores a territory between electroclash and electropop, but it also adds sax, treated guitars and memorable choruses, which all together make it rank as their best.

FOALS – ANTIDOTES (Electroclash/Indie – UK)

Now playing nonstop on my mp3 player is the insane song “Hummer”. It’s pulsating, it’s full of energy and it gives you a real kick. Foals are Yannis Philippakis (vocals and guitar), Jack Bevan (drums), Jimmy Smith (guitar), Edwin Congreave (keyboards) and Walter Gervers (bass). Based in Oxford, they are part of the new UK electroclash scene and their first LP, Antidotes (Transgressive Records, 2008), as well as their live gigs have been making the headlines of many music publications. Find their music on MySpace and see them live around the UK in October and around Europe in November.

Foals - Hummer

“they take Franz Ferdinand’s ‘music to make girls dance’ credo to the max, using guitars, drums, voice, bass and keyboards to make a sort of manic, organic, polyrhythmic electronica” (The Guardian)
