SYLVAN ESSO – DEBUT LP (Folktronica – US)

Sylvan Esso

North Carolinian duo Sylvan Esso is the new project from Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn of Megafaun. Together they make addictive tunes packed full of crisscrossed harmonies, dramatic bass drops and perfectly layered vocals. Check out their recent HypeMachine number 1, and current single, “Coffee”!

Sylvan Esso have signed to Partisan Records for the release of their debut album this spring, a collection of 10 songs recorded in Sanborn’s bedroom over the last year. Glitchy pop with a folksy twist, the pair’s music is utterly modern and yet extremely soulful. Unfortunately, you will have to wait till May 13 to get your hands on the album but in the meantime here is a couple of tracks for you…

Psapp met over a decade ago in a basement filled with instruments, makeshift percussions, second-hand bits and bobs and homemade sound creations (like a marimba made from bones) and they have been music ever since. On their long-awaited new album (nearly four years in the making), the London-based duo take to a joyous place filled with hand claps, heartfelt melodies and layers of delightful vocals.

Psapp’s fourth full length album is a magical and decidedly experimental venture, that will undoubtedly bolster the reputation of one of the bands that helped define the sound of folktronica (think Tunng or Half Cousin). A truly unique collection of songs!

LAKI MERA – ALL I HAVE (Folktronica – UK)

Glasgow band Laki Mera are not a band to rest on their laurels. After the success of their debut album The Proximity Effect, Laura Donnelly, Andrea Gobbi and Keir Long quickly set out to work on new material for their second album, knowing exactly what they wanted to do and spending countless hours in the studio to achieve exactly that. The result is Turn All Memory To White Noise, an album that artfully fuses electronics, strings, sampled sounds, and Laura Donnelly’s bewitching vocals.

“The fact that we’ve written it, composed it, scored the strings and the brass, and recorded it all in such a concentrated period of time, is what’s made it such an honest record,” producer/multi-instrumentalist Andrea Gobbi explains. With Turn All Memory to White Noise the Glasgow trio stay true to their own sound, a subtle mix of folktronica and trip hop, and concoct an intimate, yet exceptionally produced album that will no doubt their numerous fans.

LANTERNS – GLUESTICK (SynthPop – Australia)

Sydney-based producer Lanterns (Ross James of Young Romantics) creates dreamy electrofolk with just a dash of synthpop. Likened to a mixture of Oliver Tank and Thom Yorke’s solo output, Lanterns turned heads with his debut EP in early 2012.

After releasing his new single and video “Gluestick” in September 2012 with new single and winning FBi’s “Northern Lights” a month later, the adventure continues for Lantern with a new EP scheduled for release in early 2013. We can probably expect more quirky dream pop songs and delicate electronic ballads from this talented artist.
