Glass Animals

British indie four piece Glass Animals recently announced a massive world tour, which just kicked off a couple of weeks ago in their home town of Oxford. Over the next three months, the boys will be performing all over the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Canada, the US, and then some.

To celebrate the start of their mega tour, the band have just shared a brand new video for the song “Black Mambo”, taken off their debut album Zaba, released last year. Directed by David Helman, this psychedelic video comes complete with snakes, an opium den, mexican men in the jungle, and an iguana. Enjoy!

Glass Animals

Glass Animals, a four-piece from Oxfordshire, are the first signing to Wolf Tone, the new label started by Paul Epworth, who earned his place as a top producer through his work with such artists as Adele, Coldplay, Friendly Fires or The Rapture. Riding on the success of singles “Gooey” and “Pools”, Glass Animals recently released their highly anticipated debut album, Zaba, a psychedelic tropical-infused slice of indie pop with dark undertones.

The music is really good and it’s nice to see an equal devotion to indie pop, experimental electronica and 90s R&B. With its synth bleeps, bouncy guitars and catchy choruses, this album encompasses different genres and a variety of influences, establishing Glass Animals as a band to watch next year.

Back in 2010, Glass Animals created a little bit of a commotion amongst dubstep and experimental electronica enthusiasts with their dark and haunting official debut “Golden Antler”. The track ended up disappearing from the band’s SoundCloud, though its melancholy lingered in many ears long after, and Glass Animals all but vanished off the face of the earth. Two years down the line, they are back with a new single, “Cocoa Hooves” and a completely revisited version of “Golden Antlers”, both included in their debut EP.

Two years in the making, the Leaflings EP shows the band’s evolution and it most notably showcases lead singer David Barley’s maturity and assurance. The EP features four tracks and it’s out now on Kaya Kaya Records.

Not much is known about Glass Animals, except for the fact that they are based in London, they are still unsigned and their page on MySpace (where you can listen to two songs) was created only recently…

What I do know is that they were kind enough to drop one of their tracks in umstrum’s inbox yesterday and the song has been on repeat ever since…

“Golden Antlers” is one of those dark electronic tracks that stick in your mind and leave you with a feeling half way between pleasure and pain.. Much like early Telefon Tel Aviv, Son Lux or L’altra, Glass Animals build their track around the dramatic tension between the minimalistic arrangements and the frail vocals. The atmosphere is highly claustrophobic throughout the track but, for some reason, you get trapped in this structure and you end wanted to listen to “Golden Antlers” again and again…
