JOAKIM – FOREVER YOUNG (Electro/NuDisco – France)

It has been a long time in the making, but in the 2nd half of 2011 Joakim will release his 4th studio album on Tigersushi Records. Following the critical success of his latest single “Heartbreak Samba”, a sweet and sour mix of electro and soca, released in April and distributed as a free download across the internet, Joakim just launched “Forever Young”, the first single taken from his new album and also his first single to be released on Tigersushi.

Joakim describes the thought process behind the production of “Forever Young” as trying “to make the soundtrack of a late Indian summer sunset, on a beach.” It is both delightful and a little melancholic, with a dark undertone that pervades the song and a chorus resolving itself on an unresovable question…’where do you belong?’

This new single seems to be a coming of age story that coincides with the story of an artist coming home to his label. Recorded and produced close to the Tigersushi office Joakim delves into his label roster for collaborators and remixers with “Mark Kerr, who’s been in my band since the beginning, playing those bouncy african-inspired drums.” Discodeine provides the star quality for the remixes and new artists DyE rises to the occasion by taking on remix duties.

As a bonus, here’s Joakim’s excellent remix for Australian beach pop outfit Mitzi.

JOAKIM – HEARTBREAK SAMBA (Electro/Disco – France)

French artist/producer Joakim (born Joakim Bouazziz) is multi talented musician, composer and remixer. He has released three audacious albums since the beginning of the 2000s (Fantomes, Monsters & Silly Songs and Milky Ways) and a handful of singles.

His audacious releases have been widely praised by critics for their  originality. By blending elements of disco, post-punk, new wave and electropop Joakim manages to achieve a very peculiar mix that is instantly identifiable for any electro enthusiast.

A couple of weeks ago Joakim released a brand new track, “Heartbreak Samba”, and he has rather generously decided to give it away for free on his Soundcloud. As usual with Joakim, this new song defies all genre definitions. It sounds like some strange hybrid of electro, house, disco, afro-pop and samba. One thing is for sure, it’s danceable!

Joakim - Heartbreak Samba

To celebrate this release, let’s look at the other side of the man’s career: Joakim the remixer! Indeed, even if you have never heard any of his own tracks, you most surely have danced to one of Joakim’s classy remixes. To say that he is in demand would be a serious understatement as he has, so far, collaborated with Cut Copy, Simian Mobile Disco, Röyksopp, Metronomy, Robyn, Kleerup, DJ Mehdi, Grand Popo Football Club, Revolver, Friendly Fires, Alter Ego, Poni Hoax and the list goes on…

REVOLVER – MUSIC FOR A WHILE (Folk/Indie – France)

Christophe Musset, Ambroise Willaume and Jérémie Arcache are Revolver. Their unusual blend of pop music is built around two guitars, a cello and, last but not least, voice! The three parisian youngsters mention Elliott Smith, Neil Young, The Beatles, but also the greatest composers in classical music, as their influences.

Revolver - Balulalow

Their first album, Music For A While, is out now on Delabel/EMI. It’s a surprisingly mature and polished album for such young musicians. Christophe, Ambroise and Jérémie effortlessly build catchy pop songs, carried by their breezy vocals and perfect harmonies. Definitely anchored in the 60s, Music For A While is nonetheless a very contemporary album, made by inspired and promising young talents.
