PALLERS – THE SEA OF MEMORIES (Electronica – Sweden)

Formed in 2008, Pallers are a blissed-out electronica duo who make “Dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed”. At the helm of this musical ship, long-time friends Johan Angergård (Club 8, Acid House Kings, The Legends) and Henrik Mårtensson build an ever shimmering mosaic of sounds in which every element is integrated with such ease it almost seems effortless.

Pallers - Humdrum

The duo’s monumental debut album The Sea of Memories was produced and recorded during three years’ time in apartments, basements, villas and cabins in Pallers, La mar, Stockholm, Miami and Cape Town. Ten tracks where the ever growing melodies and muffled beats beneath the surface transform the listening experience into a space voyage of emotional discoveries.

Influenced equally by ambient, trip hop, electronica and pop music, The Sea of Memories is “difficult to describe in words,” Johan explains “but when music makes a three dimensional universe where you can really sink into the music, it feels like sounds are coming from everywhere, and it’s not like ‘oh, I can hear a guitar, and there’s a drum’, but to put parts together that sound a bit outer worldly.”

The Sound of Arrows are a duo consisting of Stefan Storm and Oskar Gullstrand, two twenty-somethings from Stockholm, or as some may put it, the mecca of pop music. Their story began as most others do. They came from the same town, met through mutual friends, had similar taste in music, dabbled with electropop…

They started playing around with a couple of samplers, a harp, some strings, and huge crescendos. Stefan Storm had earlier been making house music in Panache while the other half, Oskar Gullstrand, used to play in an orchestra and they used their combined experience to produce their 9-track debut, Danger! It was released in 2008 on Labrador, followed by M.A.G.I.C! in August 2009 and Into The Clouds in September of the same year.

Over the past few years, the duo’s timeless compositions have been remixed by producers such as Tom Staar, Chad Valley, Fear of Tigers, II Figures or Curtis Vodka, giving birth to wonderful remixes, some of which you can sample above.

CLUB 8 – THE PEOPLE’S RECORD (Pop/Indie – Sweden)

Club 8 are an indie pop duo formed in 1995 in Stockholm by Karolina Komstedt (from the band Poprace) and Johan Angergård (Acid House Kings, The Legends, Poprace). They released their first single “Me Too” and debut album Nouvelle on Siesta before deciding to move on to other labels. Their sound at that point could almost be categorised as anorak pop with influences from Sarah bands, Jim Ruiz and The Smiths.

In 1998/1999, their 2nd album The Friend I Once Had and the single “Missing You” was released. This song became a club and indie-radio hit in Spain and somewhat of a college radio fave in the US. The band started playing live. Their first gig was in New York in 1999. Their sound had by now developed into a more bossa nova and dance oriented one.

Club 8 - Shape up!

Their seventh album, The People’s Record, was released in May 2010 on Labrador Records. Cooked up in their famous Summersound Studios, the album mixes Dub, C-86, triphop, chill out, 80’s and bossa nova, but without ever losing focus on those wonderfully Scandinavian and melancholic pop melodies. The first single from the album was “Western Hospitality” and the band distributed for free on Labrador Records’ website.

Swedish indie pop band Acid House Kings was formed in 1991 in Stockholm by siblings Niklas Angergård and Johan Angergård and their friend Joakim Ödlund. With immaculate taste in music stemming from a childhood listening to everything from Elvis Presley to The Smiths, the Kings set out to define Scandinavian pop music.

When the band released their first studio album, Pop, Look & Listen!, back in 1992, they allegedly decided on a 10-year plan to release an album every five years in order to have a trilogy of albums released by the year 2002. According to plan, Acid House Kings released their second album, Advantage Acid House Kings, in 1997 and the album proved to be a huge step forward to form their trademark sound of jangly, catchy guitar-oriented indie pop. The album featured Julia Lannerheim as guest vocalist on a couple of songs, who eventually joined the band officially as a full time member in 2001.

This was right about the time when the band built their own, now famous, Summersound Studios. In this protected environment, they spent endless hours creating the more sophisticated third album Mondays are like Tuesdays and Tuesdays are like Wednesdays, released in 2002 on Labrador. In traditional AHK fashion, the follow-up to this album, Sing Along With Acid House Kings, came out five years later in 2007, still on Labrador.

Acid House Kings - Do What You Wanna Do

Now, after (only) four years of silence, Acid House Kings are back with a brand new album, Music Sounds Better With You, out since March 2011 on Labrador. It’s coherent and cohesive and, with its ten perfectly polished pop gems, this album is probably the band’s best to date. This work might not re-define pop or showcase in a radically new sound but Acid House Kings definitely show that they know the rules of the genre and have what it takes to craft some heartfelt, and yet charmingly sweet, pop songs.
