LADI6 – ROYAL BLUE 3000 (Trap/Soul – New Zealand)

Active since the early 2000s, Christchurch-born purveyor of genre-bending soul hip-hop Ladi6 started out in all-girl crew Sheelahroc, but quickly made a name for herself with her sophisticated combination of sultry vocals, razor sharp beats and cosmic synths.

After a long silence, Ladi6 has shared “Royal Blue,” taken from the highly anticipated Royal Blue 3000 EP. This electronic-tinged yet soulful track is an interesting take on dancehall grooves with a twist.

On the EP, producers Parks and Brandon Haru have managed to expand on Ladi6’s sound by pairing minimalist atmospheric beats with warm, heartfelt vocals. The result sounds fresh and new despite its clear nods to early funk and hip-hop.

LADI6 – THE LIBERATION OF (Soul/HipHop – New Zealand)

A sultry voice with razor sharp wit and a stage show to match, Ladi6 is fast becoming one of New Zealand’s leading hip-hop soul artist and her international aura is also growing at a dizzying pace. After the sweeping success of her 2008 debut album Not Is Not Much, released her highly awaited sophomore album in early 2011. As a statement of intent, The Liberation Of… clearly grounds Ladi6 as willing to dive head first without fear into the sea of creativity with her collaborators (fellow Kiwi producer Parks and German hip hop artist Sepalot), without ever forgetting where she comes from.

Recorded mainly in Europe, over the six months Ladi6 spent touring with Parks, The Liberation Of… was certified gold in New Zealand in July 2011 and single “Like Water” spent 22 weeks on the charts and was certified platinum.

LADI6 – TIME IS NOT MUCH (Soul/HipHop – New Zealand)

Ladi6 is no newcomer! It’s already been a decade since her quiet beginnings with Christchurch all-girl crew Sheelahroc and in ten years she has managed to make a name for herself.

This New Zealand singer/MC has managed to build a sound of her own and to take her Pacific style to foreign shores, with performances in Australia and Europe. Her ability to blend jazz, reggae and soul with razor-sharp socially conscious lyrics has given her an enviable reputation as one of NZ’s leading live performers.

In 2008, she released her critically-acclaimed first solo album Time Is Not Much, co-produced by Parks, her friend and long-time musical partner. In the past couple of years, Ladi6 hasn’t resting on her laurels, with work already under way for her eagerly awaited sophomore album, with Parks again handling production. She has been touring extensively, including some gigs with one of our favourite New Zealand artists, Julien Dyne.

As a bonus, check out the song “Go Get It”, an outstanding collaboration between Ladi6 and Munich-based DJ Sepalot. Sepalot’s sound is self-defined as “Hip Hop with a sprinkle of electro or maybe electro with the soul of a hiphop DJ.” I think that says it all…
