ON-THE-GO – ORIGINS (Alt/Indie – Russia)

On-The-Go
Russian outfit On-The-Go was formed in 2007 in Tolyatti and then moved to Moscow in early 2009. Initially they dabbled in dance-rock but, after a few years of experimentation, the band drastically changed their sound to adopt a style closer to Western indie pop.

The band’s brand new album Origins is a testament to their technical virtuosity as it clearly expands their sound palette to include hints of synthpop, low-fi blues and chamber indie-folk. What really stands out in this collection of emotion-laden songs is the vocal performance of frontman Yurii Makarychev, who has grown into a self-assured and extremely skilled singer over the years.

Amongst guitar solos, futuristic beats, elaborate and lush arrangements, the complexity of On-The-Go’s album reveals itself a little more every time, taking  the listener on an emotional journey where each note, each sound, counts and experimentation plays a key role.

ON-THE-GO – ONE SPARK EP (Pop/Rock/Indie – Russia)

On-The-Go

Formed in April 2007, On-The-Go is an indie rock five-piece from the Russian industrial town of Tolyatti but now based in Moscow. The band consists of Yura Makarychev on vocals, Maxim Makarychev on guitar and vocals, Zhenya Merkushev on keys, Sasha Guba  on bass and Grisha Dobrynin on drums.

While their first release was mostly rock music, the band took a 180 degree turn last year after signing with Xuman Records and decided to explore new artistic directions. Their first single for the Moscow imprint, “In The Wind”, featured two excellent alternative-indie tracks on which they “make an emphasis on different emotional states”, according to lead vocalist and frontman Yura Makarychev.

To help fans wait for their highly-anticipated debut album, On-The-Go released the One Spark EP a few months ago. It showcases the band’s intricate arrangements and beautifully interwoven guitars on five gorgeous tracks. For your listening pleasure, here is an amazing remix of On-The-Go’s “The Day You’ve Been Waiting For” courtesy of The Papers and Andrey Karaman (of Tip Top Tellix), both from Ekaterinburg.

THE PAPERS – REMIXES (Indie/Electronica – Russia)

Hailing from the cold Russian city of Ekaterinburg, The Papers are two young musicians/producers with a passion for chillwave, vintage synths and 80s electro sounds. Ever since bursting onto the scene with their remix of underground hit “90 (Memories of You)” by indie outfit Pompeya, The Papers have earned accolades for their flawless productions and hot DJ sets.

As an introduction to their music here is a track called “Tari Kalianji”. It features Bollywood-flavoured loops and samples and it clearly shows that the duo is equally comfortable with Funky grooves as with retro synthpop.

The Papers have an amazing ability to produce excellent remixes for other artists, but their productions are actually complete reinterpretations of the originals. Their rework of Sansara’s song “Goroda” stretches the original to almost six and a half minutes and turns the whole thing into a spaced out atmospheric affair.

For Ekaterinburg five-piece On-The-Go, they sped up the tempo just a notch, recorded new guitar and piano parts and added a touch of tambourine. And the result is… well, I guess you will just have to listen to it and judge for yourself.
