MODERAT @ SPRINGTEN (Minimal/IDM – Germany)

What a great way to start this year’s festivies! For springten‘s opening concert last night, Moderat performed a spectacular audio-visual show in a magical setting on top of a hill that overlooks the whole city of Graz. Beautiful music and gorgeous visuals by Pfadfinderei.

Moderat is an electronic music project that started in the early 2000s in Berlin as a collaboration between Sascha Ring (aka Apparat), Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (aka Modeselektor). Their first full-length album took a long time to complete, due to some creative disagreements and different opinions on how they should work. It was finally released in 2009 – seven years after their debut EP!

Moderat - A New Error

However, the final result is outstanding! With their debut album Moderat managed to please almost everybody and recevied rave reviews. Fully dedicated to the exploration of current dance music trends, they have put together an album that is eclectic and sophisticated but still retains a strong pop appeal.

Kicking off the festival season, springten will be opening tomorrow in Graz, Austria and umstrum||music will be there to cover the event. Reporting every day from May 12 to 15, we will bring you a handpicked selection of the best artists, international and local. This year’s lineup includes such acts as Moderat, Yuksek, Villa, Disco of Doom, NOZE, SomethingALaMode, James Yuill, DJ Hell, Ebony Bones, Chicks On Speed, Rainer Trüby, Zoot Woman, Erol Alkan, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Autokratz, Breakbot, ETEPETETE, Slagsmålklubben, Zombie Nation, Jahcoozi…

For the record, springfestival in Graz was born ten years ago and over the years it has grown to become the biggest Austrian festival for electronic music and art.  It is now a true meeting place for live musicians, multiple electronic genres and clubbers alike, united for a long weekend of aural enrichment and cultural hedonism. In 2010, celebrating its tenth anniversary, springfestival is ready to take on the new decade bigger and better than ever.

As a teaser, here are some tunes that are likely to float in the air of Graz in the next few days: Autokratz‘s new single “Kick” remixed by KATFYR and a remix of Rob Cowen & The Dissidents by James Yuill..

GUI BORATTO – TAKE MY BREATH AWAY (Minimal/Electronica – Brazil)

If you love electronic tunes that think outside the box, then look no further than Gui Boratto. After teasing us for two years with a string of singles and remixes, this Brazilian DJ/producer is presenting us with his second full-length release, Take My Breath Away, which really sets a new standard for minimal-tech/house music. Boratto’s blend of electronic beats, soaring melodies and haunting synths is sure to keep you hooked all through this record, which is destined both for the dancefloors and your home stereos.

Gui Boratto - No Turning Back

Between deep techno tracks and electro pop gems, Take My Breath Away is a carefully crafted collection of subtle electronica numbers, flowing along gently but never forgetting its mission, which is to make us throw our hands up in the air. Unlike most other dance releases though, Boratto’s  album is not a collection of stand alone hits compiled together, but rather a fully cohesive whole. You can purchase Take My Breath Away on Gui Boratto

Let’s not forget Boratto’s work as a remixer. His collaborations with Guy J, Adam Freeland and Bomb The Bass, amongst others, have earned him international recognition. Just below, you can listen to his remix of Ada’s “Lovestoned”, which simply cannot be described with words…

Ada - Lovestoned (Gui Boratto Remix)

Gui’s recent remix of Massive Attack’s “Paradise Circus” is yet another master stroke. This melody oriented remix combines melancholic piano keys, Hope Sandoval’s haunting vocals and a killer beat. The result is a track that only adds to the haunting beauty of the original.

saturday nite with… ELLEN ALLIEN

Ellen Allien‘s first immersion into dance music happened in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Later on, when she returned to Berlin, her home town, she got into DJing and started spinning records in some of the most renowned local clubs. Throughout the remainder of the ’90s, she hosted programs on Berlin’s Kiss FM, worked at a record shop, managed a label called Braincandy, and took part in the BPitch Control parties, which led to her to creating the label of the same name.

Her discography includes, amongst others, Berlinette (2003), Thrills (2005), and some mix albums. Her 2006 collaborations with Apparat, the LP Orchestra of Bubbles and the Turbo Dreams EP, give you a glimpse of the vast arrayof sounds that make up her repertory, including some more down-tempo tunes…

Ellen Allien & Apparat - Leave Me Alone

A personal favourite is the song “Leave Me Out”. It’s not representative of the rest of the album but it’s pretty amazing in its simplicity.

If you like what you hear, you can sample a lot more of Ellen Allien’s music on MySpace and of course you can buy all the tracks on Ellen
