In the past three years, East London producer Gold Panda has risen from underground “bedroom producer” to acclaimed remixer of of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco and HEALTH. With his gleaming hip-hop tinged instrumental electronica, the young producer instantly seduced critics and blogs.
Gold Panda’s latest offering is the new Trust EP, another wonderful, singular piece of work, featuring mournful horns, minimal beats and elegant vocal samples. The four-track collection was released last Tuesday digitally and will be out on vinyl on March 4 via Ghostly International. It is set to be followed later this year by Gold Panda’s second full-length album but in the meantime you can stream Trust just below…

Canadian visionary artist Dan Snaith, better known as Caribou, released his last album, Swim, in late 2010 and has been touring with his band ever since. At present, nothing new on the horizon for Caribou, but Snaith is currently in the studio working on a new album, tentatively slated for a 2013 release. In the meantime, let’s revisit one of his 2010 tracks: “Jamelia”.
Written by Snaith and mixed by David Wrench, “Jamelia” features Luke Lalonde on vocals, Rob Piilonen on the flute and Steve Ward ont he trombone. And since one song is probably not enough to quench your musical thrist, let’s throw in a couple of remixes from Gold Panda and DJ Koze for good measure.

Jesse Boykins III was born in Chicago, grew up between Kingston (Jamaica) and Miami and is currently based in Brooklyn. His interest in music started from an early age, already at the age of 9 he joined his local school choir and soon began auditioning around Miami and performing with local artists. In High School Jesse was invited to perform in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble and recorded a full length album with them. After graduating, he joined the New School University in New York City, where he refined his skills as a writer, performer, arranger, producer and, last but not least, as a vocalist.
Jesse Boykins III’s first EP, Dopamine: My Life On My Back, was released in February 2008 and his debut album, The Beauty Created, was released in November 2008 through NomaDic MuSic. Three years and a handful of EP’s later, Jesse is back with a new project the Way of the Wayfarer EP and the first audio taste from this EP is “Back Home (Mermaids & Dragons)” produced by Gold Panda (it also appears as an instrumental on Gold Panda’s album Lucky Shiner).

JBIII is definitely exploring new territory with Way of a Wayfarer, showing us a more electro-tinged and heavily processed brand of soul. Jesse’s perfectly controlled smooth tenor adds a touch of emotion to these five slightly experimental synthesized tunes.

Just like most of his peers, new IDM/electronica sensation Gold Panda started making music as a teenager in the privacy of his room. Armed with his uncle’s sampler and an old Atari, he sampled his Dad’s record collection, some hip hop beats and a variety of everyday sounds to make his first tracks. This hobby somehow turned into a passion and he ended up spending more and more time shut away in his room building up a library of original, dizzyingly eclectic electronic music, but always too self-conscious to share it with the world. It wasn’t until two or three years ago that his first tracks under the Gold Panda moniker started surfacing on the internet, creating quite a commotion. He began leaking remixes to various labels, blogs, and taste-makers, all of whom instantly took notice. More remixes—for the likes of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, HEALTH, and Zero 7—followed.
Gold Panda - Back Home
Soon after that, Gold Panda started releasing his own tracks, instantly seducing critics with his gleaming hip-hop tinged instrumental electronica, saturated with psychedelic hooks and expertly chopped-up beats. His first releases (Miyamae EP, Quitter’s Raga EP and the single “Before”) paved the way for his big label debut in 2010 with the You EP, released on Ghostly International. Ever since this debut, quickly followed by the critically-acclaimed album Lucky Shiner in October 2010, Gold Panda seems to have been blogged about so often on all major music sites that you very often feel that liking his music is an indubitable fact of life.
As a bonus, here’s a sublime remix of the equally beautiful original track “Marriage”. The remix comes courtesy of LA-based producer/artist Baths.
