Three years ago, Brooklyn disco duo Holy Ghost! released their sophomore album Dynamics and they are finally back with a new EP, Crime Cutz, to be released on April 29 via DFA. You have to give it to Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel for bringing back the unadulterated beats of the 80s with ambition and undeniable mastery.
The title track to the upcoming EP, which was premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats1 show, is a seven-minute super funky jam featuring retro synths and incredibly fresh hooks. It gradually builds up to an electrifying crescendo before winding down to a blissful close. A real pop tour de force!
The band is currently touring Australia and will be back in NYC for a live performance at MoMA’s Armory Party in March. More info on their website or Facebook. Buy the music on
German DJ, producer, synth wizard and dancefloor worshipper Christian Strobe knows exactly which knobs to turn and which buttons to push to make the kind of music that makes you dance while grinning from ear to ear. He describes his tunes as a mix of cosmic house, future dance and dreamwave, with influences from 80s classics and contemporary electro (think Tesla Boy, M83, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Fred Falke, Joy Division). Strobe specializes in putting everything that’s good and cheerful in a musical blender and making it danceable.
In the past year or so he has also released a good dozen remixes that have been blowing up on the blogosphere. These include productions for Feist, Satellite Stories, Missent to Denmark, Lips, Holy Ghost! and more.

It’s always exciting to hear new music by Brooklyn lads Holy Ghost!, so it’s great news to know they have a brand new single out. Even better news is that the song is available for free download via Green Label. “I Wanted To Tell Her” is a high energy funky cover of Ministry’s 1983 synthpop classic, which they have re-recorded with a little help from Nancy Whang (of LCD Soundsystem) and Juan Maclean.

As a bonus, here is a little remix for all Holy Ghost! fans out there. This synth-based minimal electro remix by Cosmic Kids was included in last month’s Hold My Breath EP and the band is giving it away for free on their official site.

Brooklyn disco collective Midnight Magic released their latest single “Drop Me A Line” last month on Permanent Vacation, with a handful of very strong remixes by fellow New Yorkers Holy Ghost! and The Juan MacLean, as well as Berlin-based DJ Steffi and Irish disco-house wunderkind Mano Le Tough.
This song is more upbeat than some of Midnight Magic’s previous material, with its catchy-as-hell piano hook and bouncy bass-line. It’s a welcome dose of unadulterated feel-good disco-funk for your record collection, further proof that Midnight Magic know their way around a good song!

It’s hardly surprising to find three former members of disco act Hercules & Love Affair (namely Andrew Raposo, Morgan Wiley and Carter Yasutake) at the core of this disco-flavored ensemble. Inspired by Tiffany Roth’s sexy vocals, they started making music as Midnight Magic about two years ago, sounding like the secret love children of Donna Summer and George Clinton.
“Drop Me A Line” is the follow-up to last year’s massive hit “Beam Me Up” which earned them rave reviews across the board and spawned a few great remixes, including memorable reworkings by Jacques Renault and Gavin Russom.

For their new single, Brooklyn duo Holy Ghost! have a very special guest on backing vocals: 70s legend Michael McDonald (of Doobie Brothers fame). Yes you heard it right, “Some Children” features Michael McDonald! His typically soulful barritone vocals turn out to be the perfect match for the duo’s funky mid tempo grooves and the final result is almost 6 minutes of pure disco-electro bliss. To top it all, DFA Records has decided to give away the song for free. It is available for online streaming and download from HERE.

The single is taken from Holy Ghost!’s self-titled debut album which dropped back in April on DFA Records. If you’re curious and want to check it out, the whole album is available for streaming on SoundCloud.
On a side note, Holy Ghost! recently announced their very first headlining tour with Jessica 6 and Elis Escobar taking place in Oct/Nov. Check out Holy Ghost’s official site or MySpace for details. To buy Holy Ghost’s debut album go to
