Swedish pop soul artist Seinabo Sey has unleashed her brand new single “Hard Time”, a subtle mix of pop-infused arrangements and soulful vocals. The single will be officially released in Scandinavia on May 14 and shortly thereafter in the UK and Ireland (worldwide release pending) but you can already stream it on SoundCloud.
Seinabo Sey’s incredible voice cruises over minimal beats and cut-up samples with the unassuming grace of a 1950s soul chanteuse and the modern edge of a 21st century pop diva. “Hard Time” follows Sey’s debut hit single “Younger”, which reached #1 on Hype Machine multiple times and garnered widespread support from The Guardian, Noisey, VIBE and many more.
Having collaborated and toured with various Swedish artists over the years, 23 year-old Seinabo Sey is now setting focus on her solo career. Working alongside revered producer/songwriter Magnus Lidehäll, who co-produced most of Veronica Maggio‘s latest album and was recently noted for his production of Mapei’s hit single “Don’t Wait”, Seinabo Sey is are hard at work on her debut album due out later this year.
If you were looking for some fresh tunes to finish off the weekend, here comes Hoodlem, a new and exciting act from inner-city Melbourne. Hoodlem is an anonymous project who first showed up on our radar in July 2013 with their understated yet soulful debut “Through”.
The song received a fair amount of love from music blogs at home and abroad, but that’s nothing compared to their newest single “Old Friend”, which has already racked up almost 200,000 plays on SoundCloud. Blending delicate vocals, pulsing minimalist beats, and plucky guitars, all tightly held together with unassuming elegance, “Old Friend” is just the kind of slow-burning killer track that will play on repeat in your head for hours after you first heard it.
If you like what you hear, you should definitely check out Hoodlem’s recently posted cover of NSYNC’s early noughties hit “Girlfriend”. This grown-up version of the boy band’s classic tune is available for streaming and free download now!

Hoodlem will be performing live at HillyDilly’s CMW showcase in May, sharing stage with fellow Aussie four-piece Sons et Al. and Nashville’s own Basecamp. Show your support on their Facebook. Buy the music on Bandcamp.
Sweden’s pop starlet Veronica Maggio is back with triumphant new single “Sergles Torg”, once again proving that she is an artist to be reckoned with in contemporary Swedish music. Her last album Satan i Gatan topped the Swedish charts for three weeks straight in 2011 and got millions of streams on Spotify and the new single managed to knock Avicii off the number 1 on iTunes the week of its release!
“Sergels Torg” was co-written and produced by Salem Al Fakir and the result is a sweet, uptempo pop gem, with an intro of ABBA calibre. What’s best about this song is that, much like the rest of Maggio’s already sizable back catalogue, it manages to be melancholic and yet irresistibly uplifting. In other words, this is pure pop bliss!
After months of anticipation, young electronic music genius James Blake recently premiered his new single “Retrograde” to rave reviews and overwhelming fan response. This very restrained, yet soulful, downtempo showcases Blake’s incredibly clear and powerful voice nestled in wooly electronics, hinting at a slightly new direction for his sophomore album, Overgrown, due next April.
Best know for his epic cover of Gonzalez and Feist’s timeless classic “Limit To Your Love” and a handful of equally mind-blowing productions, James Blake released his self-titled debut album in 2011 and quickly became one of the brightest new names to watch in British music today. A couple of years down the line, his new single “Retrograde” doesn’t disappoint one bit and it’s already getting a lot of love from remixers around the world.
